           Compelled,astheywere,toawaitanightsufficientlydarktofavortheirflight,theywereobligedtodefertheirfinalattempttillthatauspiciousmomentshouldarrive;theirgreatestdreadnowwaslestthestonethroughwhichthesentrywasdoomedtofallshouldgivewaybeforeitsrighttime,andthistheyhadinsomemeasureprovidedagainstbyproppingitupwithasmallbeamwhichtheyhaddiscoveredinthewallsthroughwhichtheyhadworkedtheirway.DanteswasoccupiedinarrangingthispieceofwoodwhenheheardFaria,whohadremainedinEdmond’scellforthepurposeofcuttingapegtosecuretheirrope-ladder,calltohiminatoneindicativeofgreatsuffering.Danteshastenedtohisdungeon,wherehefoundhimstandinginthemiddleoftheroom,paleasdeath,hisforeheadstreamingwithperspiration,andhishandsclinchedtightlytogether.

           "Graciousheavens!"exclaimedDantes,"whatisthematter?whathashappened?"

           "Quick!quick!"returnedtheabbe,"listentowhatIhavetosay."DanteslookedinfearandwonderatthelividcountenanceofFaria,whoseeyes,alreadydullandsunken,weresurroundedbypurplecircles,whilehislipswerewhiteasthoseofacorpse,andhisveryhairseemedtostandonend.

           "Tellme,Ibeseechyou,whatailsyou?"criedDantes,lettinghischiselfalltothefloor.

           "Alas,"falteredouttheabbe,"allisoverwithme.Iamseizedwithaterrible,perhapsmortalillness;Icanfeelthattheparoxysmisfastapproaching.
