           Anhourhadnearlypassed,duringwhichValentine,breathlessandmotionless,watchedsteadfastlyoverMorrel.Atlengthshefelthisheartbeat,afaintbreathplayeduponhislips,aslightshudder,announcingthereturnoflife,passedthroughtheyoungman’sframe.Atlengthhiseyesopened,buttheywereatfirstfixedandexpressionless;thensightreturned,andwithitfeelingandgrief."Oh,"hecried,inanaccentofdespair,"thecounthasdeceivedme;Iamyetliving;"andextendinghishandtowardsthetable,heseizedaknife.

           "Dearest,"exclaimedValentine,withheradorablesmile,"awake,andlookatme!"Morrelutteredaloudexclamation,andfrantic,doubtful,dazzled,asthoughbyacelestialvision,hefelluponhisknees.
