           Valentineseizedthecount’shand,andinherirresistibleimpulseofjoycarriedittoherlips.

           "Oh,thankmeagain!"saidthecount;"tellmetillyouareweary,thatIhaverestoredyoutohappiness;youdonotknowhowmuchIrequirethisassurance."

           "Oh,yes,yes,Ithankyouwithallmyheart,"saidValentine;"andifyoudoubtthesincerityofmygratitude,oh,then,askHaidee!askmybelovedsisterHaidee,whoeversinceourdeparturefromFrance,hascausedmetowaitpatientlyforthishappyday,whiletalkingtomeofyou."

           "YouthenloveHaidee?"askedMonteCristowithanemotionheinvainendeavoredtodissimulate.

           "Oh,yes,withallmysoul."

           "Well,then,listen,Valentine,"saidthecount;"Ihaveafavortoaskofyou.
