           "Friend,"hecried,"IfeelthatIamdying;thanks!"Hemadealastefforttoextendhishand,butitfellpowerlessbesidehim.ThenitappearedtohimthatMonteCristosmiled,notwiththestrangeandfearfulexpressionwhichhadsometimesrevealedtohimthesecretsofhisheart,butwiththebenevolentkindnessofafatherforachild.Atthesametimethecountappearedtoincreaseinstature,hisform,nearlydoubleitsusualheight,stoodoutinreliefagainsttheredtapestry,hisblackhairwasthrownback,andhestoodintheattitudeofanavengingangel.Morrel,overpowered,turnedaroundinthearm-chair;adelicioustorporpermeatedeveryvein.
