           "Yes,yes;letushastenup;itwasinValentine’sroom."Butbeforethedoctorandthefathercouldreachtheroom,theservantswhowereonthesamefloorhadentered,andseeingValentinepaleandmotionlessonherbed,theylifteduptheirhandstowardsheavenandstoodtransfixed,asthoughstruckbylightening."CallMadamedeVillefort!WakeMadamedeVillefort!"criedtheprocureurfromthedoorofhischamber,whichapparentlyhescarcelydaredtoleave.Butinsteadofobeyinghim,theservantsstoodwatchingM.d’Avrigny,whorantoValentine,andraisedherinhisarms."What?thisone,too?"heexclaimed."Oh,wherewillbetheend?"Villefortrushedintotheroom."Whatareyousaying,doctor?"heexclaimed,raisinghishandstoheaven.

           "IsaythatValentineisdead!"repliedd’Avrigny,inavoiceterribleinitssolemncalm.
