AndsoDantes,aftertheHundredDaysandafterWaterloo,remainedinhisdungeon,forgottenofearthandheaven.DanglarscomprehendedthefullextentofthewretchedfatethatoverwhelmedDantes;and,whenNapoleonreturnedtoFrance,he,afterthemannerofmediocreminds,termedthecoincidence,"adecreeofProvidence."ButwhenNapoleonreturnedtoParis,Danglars’heartfailedhim,andhelivedinconstantfearofDantes’returnonamissionofvengeance.
