           Ateachmoment,inthemidstofthecrowd,thebuzzing,andthelaughter,thedoor-keeper’svoicewasheardannouncingsomenamewellknowninthefinancialdepartment,respectedinthearmy,orillustriousintheliteraryworld,andwhichwasacknowledgedbyaslightmovementinthedifferentgroups.Butforonewhoseprivilegeitwastoagitatethatoceanofhumanwaves,howmanywerereceivedwithalookofindifferenceorasneerofdisdain!Atthemomentwhenthehandofthemassivetime-piece,representingEndymionasleep,pointedtonineonitsgoldenface,andthehammer,thefaithfultypeofmechanicalthought,struckninetimes,thenameoftheCountofMonteCristoresoundedinitsturn,andasifbyanelectricshockalltheassemblyturnedtowardsthedoor.

           Thecountwasdressedinblackandwithhishabitualsimplicity;hiswhitewaistcoatdisplayedhisexpansivenoblechestandhisblackstockwassingularlynoticeablebecauseofitscontrastwiththedeadlypalenessofhisface.Hisonlyjewellerywasachain,sofinethattheslendergoldthreadwasscarcelyperceptibleonhiswhitewaistcoat.
