The Burglary.

           Theglass-cutterhadentered,andwasfeelinghisway,hisarmsstretchedoutbeforehim.Atlastheappearedtohavemadehimselffamiliarwithhissurroundings.Thereweretwodoors;heboltedthemboth.

           Whenhedrewneartothebedroomdoor,MonteCristoexpectedthathewascomingin,andraisedoneofhispistols;buthesimplyheardthesoundoftheboltsslidingintheircopperrings.Itwasonlyaprecaution.Thenocturnalvisitor,ignorantofthefactthatthecounthadremovedthestaples,mightnowthinkhimselfathome,andpursuehispurposewithfullsecurity.
