           Almostmadwithgrief,anddeterminedtoventureeverythinginordertoseeValentineoncemore,andbecertainofthemisfortunehefeared,Morrelgainedtheedgeoftheclumpoftrees,andwasgoingtopassasquicklyaspossiblethroughtheflower-garden,whenthesoundofavoice,stillatsomedistance,butwhichwasborneuponthewind,reachedhim.

           Atthissound,ashewasalreadypartiallyexposedtoview,hesteppedbackandconcealedhimselfcompletely,remainingperfectlymotionless.Hehadformedhisresolution.IfitwasValentinealone,hewouldspeakasshepassed;ifshewasaccompanied,andhecouldnotspeak,stillheshouldseeher,andknowthatshewassafe;iftheywerestrangers,hewouldlistentotheirconversation,andmightunderstandsomethingofthishithertoincomprehensiblemystery.Themoonhadjustthenescapedfrombehindthecloudwhichhadconcealedit,andMorrelsawVillefortcomeoutuponthesteps,followedbyagentlemaninblack.Theydescended,andadvancedtowardstheclumpoftrees,andMorrelsoonrecognizedtheothergentlemanasDoctord’Avrigny.

           Theyoungman,seeingthemapproach,drewbackmechanically,untilhefoundhimselfstoppedbyasycamore-treeinthecentreoftheclump;therehewascompelledtoremain.Soonthetwogentlemenstoppedalso.
