           MeanwhileheadvancedthroughtheassemblageofguestsunderabatteryofcuriousglancestowardsMadamedeMorcerf,who,standingbeforeamantle-pieceornamentedwithflowers,hadseenhisentranceinalooking-glassplacedoppositethedoor,andwaspreparedtoreceivehim.Sheturnedtowardshimwithaserenesmilejustatthemomenthewasbowingtoher.
