ThemockKing’scheekswereflushedwithexcitement,hiseyeswereflashing,hissensesswaminadeliriumofpleasure.Atthispoint,justashewasraisinghishandtoflinganotherrichlargess,hecaughtsightofapale,astoundedface,whichwasstrainedforwardoutofthesecondrankofthecrowd,itsintenseeyesriveteduponhim.Asickeningconsternationstruckthroughhim;herecognisedhismother!andupflewhishand,palmoutward,beforehiseyes—thatoldinvoluntarygesture,bornofaforgottenepisode,andperpetuatedbyhabit.Inaninstantmoreshehadtornherwayoutofthepress,andpasttheguards,andwasathisside.Sheembracedhisleg,shecovereditwithkisses,shecried,"Omychild,mydarling!"liftingtowardhimafacethatwastransfiguredwithjoyandlove.ThesameinstantanofficeroftheKing’sGuardsnatchedherawaywithacurse,andsentherreelingbackwhenceshecamewithavigorousimpulsefromhisstrongarm,issuingoutofavastredrose,disposedinthesamemanner:
