TheantagonistofGrantmesnil,insteadofbearinghislance-pointfairagainstthecrestortheshieldofhisenemy,swervedsomuchfromthedirectlineastobreaktheweaponathwartthepersonofhisopponent—acircumstancewhichwasaccountedmoredisgracefulthanthatofbeingactuallyunhorsed;becausethelattermighthappenfromaccident,whereastheformerevincedawkwardnessandwantofmanagementoftheweaponandofthehorse.Thefifthknightalonemaintainedthehonourofhisparty,andpartedfairlywiththeKnightofStJohn,bothsplinteringtheirlanceswithoutadvantageoneitherside.
