ItwasofEasternorigin,havingbeenbroughtfromtheHolyLand;andthemixtureofthecymbalsandbellsseemedtobidwelcomeatonce,anddefiance,totheknightsastheyadvanced.Withtheeyesofanimmenseconcourseofspectatorsfixeduponthem,thefiveknightsadvanceduptheplatformuponwhichthetentsofthechallengersstood,andthereseparatingthemselves,eachtouchedslightly,andwiththereverseofhislance,theshieldoftheantagonisttowhomhewishedtoopposehimself.Thelowerordersofspectatorsingeneral—nay,manyofthehigherclass,anditisevensaidseveraloftheladies,wereratherdisappointedatthechampionschoosingthearmsofcourtesy.Forthesamesortofpersons,who,inthepresentday,applaudmosthighlythedeepesttragedies,weretheninterestedinatournamentexactlyinproportiontothedangerincurredbythechampionsengaged.
Havingintimatedtheirmorepacificpurpose,thechampionsretreatedtotheextremityofthelists,wheretheyremaineddrawnupinaline;whilethechallengers,sallyingeachfromhispavilion,mountedtheirhorses,and,headedbyBriandeBois-Guilbert,descendedfromtheplatform,andopposedthemselvesindividuallytotheknightswhohadtouchedtheirrespectiveshields.
Attheflourishofclarionsandtrumpets,theystartedoutagainsteachotheratfullgallop;andsuchwasthesuperiordexterityorgoodfortuneofthechallengers,thatthoseopposedtoBois-Guilbert,Malvoisin,andFront-de-Boeuf,rolledontheground.
