           “Iask,”saidshe,“theheadofthatknightwhohathjustachievedthesword,orelsethedamsel’sheadwhobroughtit,orelseboth;fortheknightslewmybrother,andtheladycausedmyfather’sdeath.”

           “Truly,”saidKingArthur,“Icannotgranttheethisdesire;itwereagainstmynatureandagainstmyname;butaskwhateverelsethouwilt,andIwilldoit.”

           “Iwilldemandnootherthing,”saidshe.

           AndasshespakecameBalin,onhiswaytoleavethecourt,andsawherwhereshestood,andknewherstraightwayforhismother’smurderess,whomhehadsoughtinvainthreeyears.AndwhentheytoldhimthatshehadaskedKingArthurforhishead,hewentupstraighttoherandsaid,“Mayevilhavethee!Thoudesirestmyhead,thereforeshaltthoulosethine;”andwithhisswordhelightlysmoteherheadoff,inthepresenceofthekingandallthecourt.

           “Alas,forshame!”criedoutKingArthur,risingupinwrath;“whyhastthoudonethis,shamingbothmeandmycourt?Iambeholdengreatlytothislady,andundermysafeconductcameshehere;thydeedispassingshameful;nevershallIforgivethyvillainy
