           ThenKingLot,KingCarados,andtheKingoftheHundredKnights—whoalsorodewiththem—goingroundtotherear,setonKingArthurfiercelyfrombehind;butArthur,turningtohisknights,foughteverintheforemostpressuntilhishorsewasslainbeneathhim.Atthat,KingLotrodefuriouslyathim,andsmotehimdown;butrisingstraightway,andbeingsetagainonhorseback,hedrewhisswordExcaliburthathehadgainedbyMerlinfromtheladyofthelake,which,shiningbrightlyasthelightofthirtytorches,dazzledtheeyesofhisenemies.Andtherewithfallingonthemafreshwithallhisknights,hedrovethembackandslewthemingreatnumbers,andMerlinbyhisartsscatteredamongthemfireandpitchysmoke,sothattheybrokeandfled.ThenallthecommonpeopleofCaerleon,seeingthemgiveway,roseupwithoneaccord,andrushedatthemwithclubsandstaves,andchasedthemfarandwide,andslewmanygreatknightsandlords,andtheremainderofthemfledandwereseennomore.ThuswonKingArthurhisfirstbattleandputhisenemiestoshame.
