           TherewiththedamselcametoKingArthur,andsalutedhim,andhesalutedher,andsaid,“Lady,whatswordisthatthearmholdethabovethewater?Iwouldthatitweremine,forIhavenosword.”

           “SirKing,”saidtheladyofthelake,“thatswordismine,andifthouwiltgivemeinreturnagiftwheneverIshallaskitofthee,thoushalthaveit.”

           “Bymyfaith,”saidhe,“Iwillgivetheeanygiftthatthoushaltask.”

           “Well,”saidthedamsel,“gointoyonderbarge,androwthyselfuntothesword,andtakeitandthescabbardwiththee,andIwillaskmygiftoftheewhenIseemytime.”

           SoKingArthurandMerlinalighted,andtiedtheirhorsestotwotrees,andwentintothebarge;andwhentheycametotheswordthatthehandheld,KingArthurtookitbythehandleandboreitwithhim,andthearmandhandwentdownunderthewater;andsotheycamebacktoland,androdeagaintoCaerleon.

           OnthemorrowMerlinbadeKingArthurtosetfiercelyontheenemy;andinthemeanwhilethreehundredgoodknightswentovertoKingArthurfromtherebels’side.
