           Sotheyrodetogether,andwhentheycametothecastle,SirGawaincriedaloud,“QueenMorganleFay,sendoutthyknightsthatwemayfightwiththem.”

           Thenthequeenurgedherknightstoissueforth,buttheydurstnot,fortheywellknewSirTristram,andfearedhimgreatly.

           SoSirTristramandSirGawainwentontheirway,andastheyrodetheysawaknight,namedSirBrewse-without-pity,chasingalady,withintenttoslayher.ThenSirGawainprayedSirTristramtoholdstillandlethimassailthatknight.SoherodeupbetweenSirBrewseandthelady,andcried,“Falseknight,turntheetomeandleavethatlady.”ThenSirBrewseturnedandsethisspearinrest,andrushedagainstSirGawainandoverthrewhim,androdehishorseuponhimashelay,whichwhenSirTristramsaw,hecried,“Forbearthatvillainy,”andgallopedathim.ButwhenSirBrewsesawbytheshielditwasSirTristram,heturnedandfled.AndthoughSirTristramfollowedswiftlyafterhim,yethewassowellhorsedthatheescaped.

           AnonSirTristramandSirGawaincamenightheMaiden’sCastle,andthereanoldknightnamedSirPellonnesgavethemlodging.AndSirPersides,thesonofSirPellonnes,agoodknight,cameouttowelcomethem.And,astheystoodtalkingatabaywindowofthecastle,theysawagoodlyknightridebyonablackhorse,andcarryingablackshield.“Whatknightisthat?”askedTristram.
