           Anonadamselmethimasherode,andtoldhimofaknightadventurouswhodidgreatharmthereby,andprayedhimforhishelp.ButashewentwithherhemetSirGawain,whoknewthedamselforamaidenofQueenMorganleFay.Knowing,therefore,thatsheneedsmusthaveevilplotsagainstSirTristram,SirGawaindemandedofhimcourteouslywhitherhewent.

           “Iknownotwhither,”saidhe,“saveasthisdamselleadethme.”

           “Sir,”saidSirGawain,“yeshallnotridewithher,forsheandherladyneveryetdidgoodtoany;”and,drawinghissword,hesaidtothedamsel,“Tellmenowstraightwayforwhatcausethouleadestthisknightorelseshaltthoudie;forIknowofoldthylady’streason.”

           “Mercy,SirGawain,”criedthedamsel,“andIwilltelltheeall.”ThenshetoldhimthatQueenMorganhadordainedthirtyfairdamselstoseekoutSirLancelotandSirTristram,andbytheirwilespersuadethemtohercastle,whereshehadthirtyknightsinwaittoslaythem.

           “Ohshame!”criedSirGawain,“thateversuchfoultreasonshouldbewroughtbyaqueen,andaking’ssister.”ThensaidhetoSirTristram,“Sirknight,ifyewillstandwithme,wewilltogetherprovethemaliceofthesethirtyknights.
