           “Oh,therewillcertainlybesomethingelsenicetosayaboutit,”saidAnneeasily.“Therealwaysisaboutababy.”

           ThebabyWASpretty,however,andMr.Whitefeltthathegothisfivedollars’worthofthegirls’honestdelightovertheplumplittlenewcomer.Butthatwasthefirst,last,andonlytimethatLorenzoWhiteeversubscribedtoanything.

           Anne,tiredasshewas,madeonemoreeffortforthepublicwealthatnight,slippingoverthefieldstointerviewMr.Harrison,whowasasusualsmokinghispipeontheverandawithGingerbesidehim.StricklyspeakinghewasontheCarmodyroad;butJaneandGertie,whowerenotacquaintedwithhimsavebydoubtfulreport,hadnervouslybeggedAnnetocanvasshim.

           Mr.Harrison,however,flatlyrefusedtosubscribeacent,andallAnne’swileswereinvain.

           “ButIthoughtyouapprovedofoursociety,Mr.Harrison,”shemourned.

           “SoIdo...soIdo...butmyapprovaldoesn’tgoasdeepasmypocket,Anne.”

           “AfewmoreexperiencessuchasIhavehadtodaywouldmakemeasmuchofapessimistasMissElizaAndrews,”Annetoldherreflectionintheeastgablemirroratbedtime.
