           Marillapassedherhardwork-wornhandoverthegirl’sglossy,tumbledhairwithawonderfultenderness.WhenAnne’ssobsgrewquietershesaid,verygentlyforher,

           “Youtakethingstoomuchtoheart,Anne.Weallmakemistakes...butpeopleforgetthem.AndJonahdayscometoeverybody.AsforAnthonyPye,whyneedyoucareifhedoesdislikeyou?Heistheonlyone.”

           “Ican’thelpit.Iwanteverybodytolovemeandithurtsmesowhenanybodydoesn’t.AndAnthonyneverwillnow.Oh,Ijustmadeanidiotofmyselftoday,Marilla.I’lltellyouthewholestory.”

           Marillalistenedtothewholestory,andifshesmiledatcertainpartsofitAnneneverknew.Whenthetalewasendedshesaidbriskly,

           “Well,nevermind.Thisday’sdoneandthere’sanewonecomingtomorrow,withnomistakesinityet,asyouusedtosayyourself.Justcomedownstairsandhaveyoursupper.You’llseeifagoodcupofteaandthoseplumpuffsImadetodaywon’theartenyouup.
