Everywherealongthewalls,packedliketheberthsuponanemigrantship,laytheChristiansofoldRome.Theyellowlightflickeredovertheshrivelledfeaturesofthemummies,andgleameduponroundedskullsandlong,whitearmbonescrossedoverfleshlesschests.AndeverywhereashepassedKennedylookedwithwistfuleyesuponinscriptions,funeralvessels,pictures,vestments,utensils,alllyingaspioushandshadplacedthemsomanycenturiesago.Itwasapparenttohim,eveninthosehurried,passingglances,thatthiswastheearliestandfinestofthecatacombs,containingsuchastorehouseofRomanremainsashadneverbeforecomeatonetimeundertheobservationofthestudent.
"Whatwouldhappenifthelightwentout?"heasked,astheyhurriedonwards.
"Ihaveasparecandleandaboxofmatchesinmypocket.Bytheway,Kennedy,haveyouanymatches?"
"No;youhadbettergivemesome."
