Theyhaddescendedsometwentyfeetfromthelevelofthebyre,andtheywerestandingnowinasquarechambercutoutofthesofttufa.Thelanterncastaflickeringlight,brightbelowanddimabove,overthecrackedbrownwalls.Ineverydirectionweretheblackopeningsofpassageswhichradiatedfromthiscommoncentre.

Heledthewaydownoneofthecorridors,andtheEnglishmanfollowedcloselyathisheels.Everynowandthenthepassagebifurcated,butBurgerwasevidentlyfollowingsomesecretmarksofhisown,forheneitherstoppednorhesitated.
