Ihavesaidthatagainstthewall—ontheright-handsideofthedoorway(theright-handsideaswelookedatit,buttheleftasoneentered)—therestoodalargemummy-case.Toourunutterableamazementitwasslowlyopening.Gradually,graduallythelidwasswingingback,andtheblackslitwhichmarkedtheopeningwasbecomingwiderandwider.Sogentlyandcarefullywasitdonethatthemovementwasalmostimperceptible.Then,aswebreathlesslywatchedit,awhitethinhandappearedattheopening,pushingbackthepaintedlid,thenanotherhand,andfinallyaface—afacewhichwasfamiliartousboth,thatofProfessorAndreas.
