InthecourseofthedayhepaidhisrespectstoSignorPietroBaglioni,professorofmedicineintheuniversity,aphysicianofeminentreputetowhomGiovannihadbroughtaletterofintroduction.Theprofessorwasanelderlypersonage,apparentlyofgenialnature,andhabitsthatmightalmostbecalledjovial.Hekepttheyoungmantodinner,andmadehimselfveryagreeablebythefreedomandlivelinessofhisconversation,especiallywhenwarmedbyaflaskortwoofTuscanwine.Giovanni,conceivingthatmenofscience,inhabitantsofthesamecity,mustneedsbeonfamiliartermswithoneanother,tookanopportunitytomentionthenameofDr.Rappaccini.
