Whilehestillgazedupwardintothedeeparchofthefirmamentandhadliftedhishandstopray,acloud,thoughnowindwasstirring,hurriedacrossthezenithandhidthebrighteningstars.Theblueskywasstillvisible,exceptdirectlyoverhead,wherethisblackmassofcloudwassweepingswiftlynorthward.Aloftintheair,asiffromthedepthsofthecloud,cameaconfusedanddoubtfulsoundofvoices.Oncethelistenerfanciedthathecoulddistinguishtheaccentsoftowns-peopleofhisown,menandwomen,bothpiousandungodly,manyofwhomhehadmetatthecommuniontable,andhadseenothersriotingatthetavern.Thenextmoment,soindistinctwerethesounds,hedoubtedwhetherhehadheardaughtbutthemurmuroftheoldforest,whisperingwithoutawind.
