           Itsohappenedthattheparlordoorwaspartlyofglass,shadedbyasilkencurtain,thefoldsofwhichhungalittleawry.Sostrongwasthemerchant’sinterestinwitnessingwhatwastoensuebetweenthefairPollyandthegallantFeathertopthat,afterquittingtheroom,hecouldbynomeansrefrainfrompeepingthroughthecreviceofthecurtain.

           Buttherewasnothingverymiraculoustobeseen;nothing—exceptthetriflespreviouslynoticed—toconfirmtheideaofasupernaturalperilenvironingtheprettyPolly.Thestrangeritistruewasevidentlyathoroughandpractisedmanoftheworld,systematicandself-possessed,andthereforethesortofapersontowhomaparentoughtnottoconfideasimple,younggirlwithoutduewatchfulnessfortheresult.
