ThelittlegirlspentmostoftheafternoontalkingwiththeScarecrowandtheTinWoodman,whorelatedtoherallthathadtakenplaceintheLandofOzsinceDorothyhadleftit.ShewasmuchinterestedinthestoryofOzma,whohadbeen,whenababy,stolenbyawickedoldwitchandtransformedintoaboy.Shedidnotknowthatshehadeverbeenagirluntilshewasrestoredtohernaturalformbyakindsorceress.ThenitwasfoundthatshewastheonlychildoftheformerRulerofOz,andwasentitledtoruleinhisplace.Ozmahadmanyadventures,however,beforesheregainedherfather’sthrone,andintheseshewasaccompaniedbyapumpkin-headedman,ahighlymagnifiedandthoroughlyeducatedWoggle-Bug,andawonderfulsawhorsethathadbeenbroughttolifebymeansofamagicpowder.TheScarecrowandtheTinWoodmanhadalsoassistedher;buttheCowardlyLion,whoruledthegreatforestastheKingofBeasts,knewnothingofOzmauntilaftershebecamethereigningprincessofOz.
