           Inthemorningsheleanedoutofthewindowofherprisoninthetowertoseeiftherewasanywaytoescape.Theroomwasnotsoveryhighup,whencomparedwithourmodernbuildings,butitwasfarenoughabovethetreesandfarmhousestogiveheragoodviewofthesurroundingcountry.

           Totheeastshesawtheforest,withthesandsbeyonditandtheoceanbeyondthat.Therewasevenadarkspeckupontheshorethatshethoughtmightbethechicken-coopinwhichshehadarrivedatthissingularcountry.

           Thenshelookedtothenorth,andsawadeepbutnarrowvalleylyingbetweentworockymountains,andathirdmountainthatshutoffthevalleyatthefurtherend.

           WestwardthefertileLandofEvsuddenlyendedalittlewayfromthepalace,andthegirlcouldseemilesandmilesofsandydesertthatstretchedfurtherthanhereyescouldreach.Itwasthisdesert,shethought,withmuchinterest,thataloneseparatedherfromthewonderfulLandofOz,andsherememberedsorrowfullythatshehadbeentoldnoonehadeverbeenabletocrossthisdangerouswastebutherself.Onceacyclonehadcarriedheracrossit,andamagicalpairofsilvershoeshadcarriedherbackagain.Butnowshehadneitheracyclonenorsilvershoestoassisther,andherconditionwassadindeed.Forshehadbecometheprisonerofadisagreeableprincesswhoinsistedthatshemustexchangeherheadforanotheronethatshewasnotusedto,andwhichmightnotfitheratall.
