AndthencameNickChopper,theTinWoodman,withhisfunnel-shapedcaptippedcarelesslyoverhisleftear,hisgleamingaxeoverhisrightshoulder,andhiswholebodysparklingasbrightlyasithadeverdoneintheolddayswhenfirstsheknewhim.
TheTinWoodmanwasonfoot,marchingattheheadofacompanyoftwenty-sevensoldiers,ofwhomsomewereleanandsomefat,someshortandsometall;butallthetwenty-sevenweredressedinhandsomeuniformsofvariousdesignsandcolors,notwobeingalikeinanyrespect.
Behindthesoldiersthegreencarpetrolleditselfupagain,sothattherewasalwaysjustenoughofitfortheprocessiontowalkupon,inorderthattheirfeetmightnotcomeincontactwiththedeadly,life-destroyingsandsofthedesert.
Dorothyknewatonceitwasamagiccarpetshebeheld,andherheartbeathighwithhopeandjoyassherealizedshewassoontoberescuedandallowedtogreetherdearlybelovedfriendsofOz--theScarecrow,theTinWoodmanandtheCowardlyLion.
Indeed,thegirlfeltherselfasgoodasrescuedassoonassherecognizedthoseintheprocession,forshewellknewthecourageandloyaltyofheroldcomrades,andalsobelievedthatanyotherswhocamefromtheirmarvelouscountrywouldprovetobepleasantandreliableacquaintances.
