           Theshaggymansearchedinonepocket,carefully;andinanotherpocket;andinathird.Atlasthedrewoutasmallparcelwrappedincrumpledpaperandtiedwithacottonstring.Heunwoundthestring,openedtheparcel,andtookoutabitofmetalshapedlikeahorseshoe.Itwasdullandbrown,andnotverypretty.

           "This,mydear,"saidhe,impressively,"isthewonderfulLoveMagnet.ItwasgivenmebyanEskimointheSandwichIslands—wheretherearenosandwichesatall—andaslongasIcarryiteverylivingthingImeetwilllovemedearly."

           "Whydidn’ttheEskimokeepit?"sheasked,lookingattheMagnetwithinterest.

           "Hegottiredofbeinglovedandlongedforsomeonetohatehim.SohegavemetheMagnetandtheverynextdayagrizzlybearatehim."

           "Wasn’thesorrythen?"sheinquired.

           "Hedidn’tsay,"repliedtheshaggyman,wrappingandtyingtheLoveMagnetwithgreatcareandputtingitawayinanotherpocket."Butthebeardidn’tseemsorryabit,"headded.

           "Didyouknowthebear?"askedDorothy.

           "Yes;weusedtoplayballtogetherintheCaviarIslands.ThebearlovedmebecauseIhadtheLoveMagnet.Icouldn’tblamehimforeatingtheEskimo,becauseitwashisnaturetodoso."

           "Once,"saidDorothy,"IknewaHungryTigerwholongedtoeatfatbabies,becauseitwashisnatureto;butheneverateanybecausehehadaConscience."

           "Thisbear,"repliedtheshaggyman,withasigh,"hadnoConscience,yousee."

           Theshaggymansatsilentforseveralminutes,apparentlyconsideringthecasesofthebearandthetiger,whileTotowatchedhimwithanairofgreatinterest
