Hebegantoseethatsomethingveryremarkablehadhappened;butwhenhelookedatthelittleboysittingonthecracker-box,withtheinnocent,anxiousexpressioninhischildisheyes,andsawthathewasnotchangedatall,butwassimplyashehadbeenthedaybefore,justahandsome,cheerful,bravelittlefellowinabluesuitandredneck-ribbon,allthisinformationaboutthenobilitybewilderedhim.HewasallthemorebewilderedbecauseCedricgaveitwithsuchingenuoussimplicity,andplainlywithoutrealizinghimselfhowstupendousitwas.
“Wha—whatdidyousayyournamewas?”Mr.Hobbsinquired.
“It’sCedricErrol,LordFauntleroy,”answeredCedric.“ThatwaswhatMr.Havishamcalledme.HesaidwhenIwentintotheroom:’AndsothisislittleLordFauntleroy!’”
“Well,”saidMr.Hobbs,“I’llbe—jiggered!”
Thiswasanexclamationhealwaysusedwhenhewasverymuchastonishedorexcited.Hecouldthinkofnothingelsetosayjustatthatpuzzlingmoment.
Cedricfeltittobequiteaproperandsuitableejaculation.HisrespectandaffectionforMr.Hobbsweresogreatthatheadmiredandapprovedofallhisremarks.HehadnotseenenoughofsocietyasyettomakehimrealizethatsometimesMr.Hobbswasnotquiteconventional.Heknew,ofcourse,thathewasdifferentfromhismamma,but,then,hismammawasalady,andhehadanideathatladieswerealwaysdifferentfromgentlemen.

“Englandisalongwayoff,isn’tit?”heasked.
“It’sacrosstheAtlanticOcean,”Mr.Hobbsanswered.
