           Mrs.Hoovenstaredatthecoinstupefied.Theyoungmandisappeared.Hethought,then,thatshewasbegging.Ithadcometothat;she,independentallherlife,whosehusbandhadheldfivehundredacresofwheatland,hadbeentakenforabeggar.Aflushofshameshottoherface.Shewasabouttothrowthemoneyafteritsgiver.Butatthemoment,Hildaagainexclaimed:

           “Mammy,I’mhungry.”

           Withamovementofinfinitelassitudeandresignedacceptanceofthesituation,Mrs.Hoovenputthecoininherpocket.Shehadnorighttobeproudanylonger.
