           Asshespoke,herfacetoofadedquiteaway,onlyDiamondthoughthecouldstillseehereyesshiningthroughtheblue.Whenhewentcloser,however,hefoundthatwhathethoughthereyeswereonlytwohollowsintheice.NorthWindwasquitegone;andDiamondwouldhavecried,ifhehadnottrustedhersothoroughly.Sohesatstillintheblueairofthecavernlisteningtothewashandrippleofthewaterallaboutthebaseoftheiceberg,asitspedonandonintotheopenseanorthwards.Itwasanexcellentcrafttogowiththecurrent,fortherewastwiceasmuchofitbelowwaterasabove.Butalightsouthwindwasblowingtoo,andsoitwentfast.

           AfteralittlewhileDiamondwentoutandsatontheedgeofhisfloatingisland,andlookeddownintotheoceanbeneathhim.Thewhitesidesofthebergreflectedsomuchlightbelowthewater,thathecouldseefardownintothegreenabyss.SometimeshefanciedhesawtheeyesofNorthWindlookingupathimfrombelow,butthefancyneverlastedbeyondthemomentofitsbirth.Andthetimepassedhedidnotknowhow,forhefeltasifhewereinadream.Whenhegottiredofthegreenwater,hewentintothebluecave;andwhenhegottiredofthebluecavehewentoutandgazedallabouthimonthebluesea,eversparklinginthesun,whichkeptwheelingaboutthesky,nevergoingbelowthehorizon.Buthechieflygazednorthwards,toseewhetheranylandwereappearing.Allthistimeheneverwantedtoeat.Hebrokeofflittlebitsofthebergnowandthenandsuckedthem,andhethoughtthemverynice.
