Chapter XXXVI. Diamond Questions North Wind

           Sostrongdidhisfeelingbecome,thatatlasthebegantodoubtwhetherhewasnotinoneofthosepreciousdreamshehadsooftenhad,inwhichhefloatedaboutontheairatwill.Butsomethingmadehimlookup,andtohisunspeakabledelight,hefoundhisupliftedhandslyinginthoseofNorthWind,whowasdancingwithhim,roundandroundthelongbareroom,herhairnowfallingtothefloor,nowfillingthearchedceiling,hereyesshiningonhimlikethinkingstars,andthesweetestofgrandsmilesplayingbreezilyaboutherbeautifulmouth.Shewas,assooftenbefore,oftheheightofarathertalllady.Shedidnotstoopinordertodancewithhim,butheldhishandshighinhers.Whenhesawher,hegaveonespring,andhisarmswereaboutherneck,andherarmsholdinghimtoherbosom.Thesamemomentshesweptwithhimthroughtheopenwindowinatwhichthemoonwasshining,madeacircuitlikeabirdabouttoalight,andsettledwithhiminhisnestonthetopofthegreatbeech-tree.Theresheplacedhimonherlapandbegantohushhimasifhewereherownbaby,andDiamondwassoentirelyhappythathedidnotcaretospeakaword.Atlength,however,hefoundthathewasgoingtosleep,andthatwouldbetolosesomuch,that,pleasantasitwas,hecouldnotconsent.

           “Please,dearNorthWind,”hesaid,“IamsohappythatI’mafraidit’sadream.HowamItoknowthatit’snotadream?”

           “Whatdoesitmatter?”returnedNorthWind.

           “Ishould,cry”saidDiamond.
