Chapter XXXV. I Make Diamond's Acquaintance

           

           “There’satreestruck!”Isaid;andwhenwelookedround,aftertheblindingoftheflashhadleftoureyes,wesawahugeboughofthebeech-treeinwhichwasDiamond’snesthangingtothegroundlikethebrokenwingofabird.

           “There!”criedNanny;“Itoldyouso.Ifyouhadbeenupthereyouseewhatwouldhavehappened,youlittlesilly!”

           “No,Idon’t,”saidDiamond,andbegantosingtoDulcimer.AllIcouldhearofthesong,fortheotherchildrenweregoingonwiththeirchatter,was—

           Theclockstruckone,

           Andthemousecamedown.

           Dickery,dickery,dock!

           Thentherecameablastofwind,andtherainfollowedinstraight-pouringlines,asifoutofawatering-pot.DiamondjumpedupwithhislittleDulcimerinhisarms,andNannycaughtupthelittleboy,andtheyranforthecottage.Jimvanishedwithadoubleshuffle,andIwentintothehouse.

           WhenIcameoutagaintoreturnhome,thecloudsweregone,andtheeveningskyglimmeredthroughthetrees,blue,andpale-greentowardsthewest,Iturnedmystepsalittleasidetolookatthestrickenbeech.Isawtheboughtornfromthestem,andthatwasallthetwilightwouldallowmetosee.WhileIstoodgazing,downfromtheskycameasoundofsinging,butthevoicewasneitheroflarknorofnightingale:itwassweeterthaneither:itwasthevoiceofDiamond,upinhisairynest:—

           Thelightningandthunder,

           Theygoandtheycome;

           Butthestarsandthestillness

           Arealwaysathome.

           Andthenthevoiceceased.

           “Good-night,Diamond,”Isaid.

           “Good-night,sir,”answeredDiamond
