Chapter XXXV. I Make Diamond's Acquaintance

           Raymondconfessedthatsheoftenrangherbelljusttohaveoncemorethepleasureofseeingthelovelystillnessoftheboy’sface,withthoseblueeyeswhichseemedrathermadeforotherpeopletolookintothanforhimselftolookoutof.

           ItwasplainertoothersthantohimselfthathefeltthedesertionofNannyandJim.Theyappearedtoregardhimasameretoy,exceptwhentheyfoundhecouldministertothescrupleofusinghim—generallywithsuccess.Theywere,however,well-behavedtoawonderfuldegree;whileIhavelittledoubtthatmuchoftheirgoodbehaviourwasowingtotheunconsciousinfluenceoftheboytheycalledGod’sbaby.

           OneverystrangethingisthatIcouldneverfindoutwherehegotsomeofhismanysongs.Attimestheywouldbebutbubblesblownoutofanurseryrhyme,aswasthefollowing,whichIheardhimsingoneeveningtohislittleDulcimer.Therewereaboutascoreofsheepfeedinginapaddocknearhim,theirwhitewooldyedapaleroseinthelightofthesettingsun.Thoseinthelongshadowsfromthetreesweredeadwhite;thoseinthesunlightwerehalfglorifiedwithpalerose.

           LittleBoPeep,shelosthersheep,

           Anddidn’tknowwheretofindthem;

           Theywereovertheheightandoutofsight,

           Trailingtheirtailsbehindthem.

           LittleBoPeepwokeoutofhersleep,

           Jump’dupandsetouttofindthem:

           “Thesillythings,they’vegotnowings,

           Andthey’velefttheirtrailsbehindthem:

           “They’vetakentheirtails,butthey’velefttheirtrails,

           AndsoIshallfollowandfindthem;”

           Forwhereveratailhaddraggedatrail,

           Thelonggrassgrewbehindthem.
