Chapter III. Old Diamond

           Itwasfulltide,andthestarswereshiningclearinitsdepths,foritlaystill,waitingfortheturntorundownagaintothesea.Theywalkedalongitsside.Buttheyhadnotwalkedfarbeforeitssurfacewascoveredwithripples,andthestarshadvanishedfromitsbosom.

           AndNorthWindwasnowtallasafull-growngirl.Herhairwasflyingaboutherhead,andthewindwasblowingabreezedowntheriver.Butsheturnedasideandwentupanarrowlane,andasshewentherhairfelldownaroundher.

           “Ihavesomeratherdisagreeableworktodoto-night,”shesaid,“beforeIgetouttosea,andImustsetaboutitatonce.Thedisagreeableworkmustbelookedafterfirst.”

           Sosaying,shelaidholdofDiamondandbegantorun,glidingalongfasterandfaster.Diamondkeptupwithheraswellashecould.Shemademanyturningsandwindings,apparentlybecauseitwasnotquiteeasytogethimoverwallsandhouses.Oncetheyranthroughahallwheretheyfoundbackandfrontdoorsopen.AtthefootofthestairNorthWindstoodstill,andDiamond,hearingagreatgrowl,startedinterror,andthere,insteadofNorthWind,wasahugewolfbyhisside.Heletgohisholdindismay,andthewolfboundedupthestair.Thewindowsofthehouserattledandshookasifgunswerefiring,andthesoundofagreatfallcamefromabove.Diamondstoodwithwhitefacestaringupatthelanding.

           “Surely,”hethought,“NorthWindcan’tbeeatingoneofthechildren!”Comingtohimselfallatonce,herushedafterherwithhislittlefistclenched.
