           Josephstoodbewildered,unabletoanswer.

           “I’veboughtasmallplaceinKent,”continuedMr.Raymond,“andImusthaveapairtomycarriage,fortheroadsarehillythereabouts.Idon’twanttomakeashowwithapairofhigh-steppers.Ithinkthesewilljustdo.Suppose,foraweekortwo,yousetyourselftotakeRubydownandbringDiamondup.IfwecouldonlylayapipefromRuby’ssidesintoDiamond’s,itwouldbetheworkofamoment.ButIfearthatwouldn’tanswer.”

           AstronginclinationtolaughintrudeduponJoseph’sinclinationtocry,andmadespeechstillharderthanbefore.
