Chapter XXXI. The North Wind Doth Blow

           Indeed,asfarasprovisionwent,hewasratherworseoffwithRubyandNannythanhehadbeenbefore,butontheotherhand,Nannywasagreathelpinthehouse,anditwasacomforttohimtothinkthatwhenthenewbabydidcome,Nannywouldbewithhiswife.

           OfGod’sgiftsababyisofthegreatest;thereforeitisnowonderthatwhenthisonecame,shewasasheartilywelcomedbythelittlehouseholdasifshehadbroughtplentywithher.Ofcourseshemadeagreatdifferenceintheworktobedone—farmoredifferencethanhersizewarranted,butNannywasnoendofhelp,andDiamondwasasmuchofasunbeamasever,andbegantosingtothenewbabythefirstmomenthegotherinhisarms.Buthedidnotsingthesamesongstoherthathehadsungtohisbrother,for,hesaid,shewasanewbabyandmusthavenewsongs;andbesides,shewasasister-babyandnotabrother-baby,andofcoursewouldnotlikethesamekindofsongs.Wherethedifferenceinhissongslay,however,Idonotpretendtobeabletopointout.OnethingIamsureof,thattheynotonlyhadnosmallshareintheeducationofthelittlegirl,buthelpedthewholefamilyagreatdealmorethantheywereaware.

           Howtheymanagedtogetthroughthelongdrearyexpensivewinter,Icanhardlysay.Sometimesthingswerebetter,sometimesworse.Butatlastthespringcame,andthewinterwasoverandgone,andthatwasmuch.Still,Mr.Raymonddidnotreturn,andalthoughthemotherwouldhavebeenabletomanagewithoutNannynow,theycouldnotlookforaplaceforhersolongastheyhadRuby;andtheywerenotaltogethersorryforthis
