           Sothefirstdayofthefourthquarterhedidfindthecottage,andthenextdayhefoundtheglade.Fornearlyanotherweekhehauntedit.Buttheprincessnevercame.Ihavelittledoubtshewasonthefartheredgeofitsomepartofeverynight,butatthisperiodshealwaysworeblack,and,therebeinglittleornolight,theprinceneversawher.Norwouldhehaveknownherifhehadseenher.Howcouldhehavetakentheworndecrepitcreatureshewasnow,forthegloriousPrincessDaylight?

           Atlast,onenightwhentherewasnomoonatall,heventurednearthehouse.Thereheheardvoicestalking,althoughitwaspastmidnight;forherwomenwereinconsiderableuneasiness,becausetheonewhoseturnitwastowatchherhadfallenasleep,andhadnotseenwhichwayshewent,andthiswasanightwhenshewouldprobablywanderveryfar,describingacirclewhichdidnottouchtheopengladeatall,butstretchedawayfromthebackofthehouse,deepintothatsideoftheforest—apartofwhichtheprinceknewnothing.Whenheunderstoodfromwhattheysaidthatshehaddisappeared,andthatshemusthavegonesomewhereinthesaiddirection,heplungedatonceintothewoodtoseeifhecouldfindher.Forhoursheroamedwithnothingtoguidehimbutthevaguenotionofacirclewhichononesideborderedonthehouse,forsomuchhadhepickedupfromthetalkhehadoverheard.

           Itwasgettingtowardsthedawn,butasyettherewasnostreakoflightinthesky,whenhecametoagreatbirch-tree,andsatdownwearyatthefootofit.
