           Althoughthefameofherbeautyandsweetnesshadgoneabroad,yetaseverybodyknewshewasunderabadspell,nokingintheneighbourhoodhadanydesiretohaveherforadaughter-in-law.Therewereseriousobjectionstosucharelation.

           Aboutthistimeinaneighbouringkingdom,inconsequenceofthewickednessofthenobles,aninsurrectiontookplaceuponthedeathoftheoldking,thegreaterpartofthenobilitywasmassacred,andtheyoungprincewascompelledtofleeforhislife,disguisedlikeapeasant.Forsometime,untilhegotoutofthecountry,hesufferedmuchfromhungerandfatigue;butwhenhegotintothatruledbytheprincess’sfather,andhadnolongeranyfearofbeingrecognised,hefaredbetter,forthepeoplewerekind.Hedidnotabandonhisdisguise,however.Onetolerablereasonwasthathehadnootherclothestoputon,andanotherthathehadverylittlemoney,anddidnotknowwheretogetanymore.Therewasnogoodintellingeverybodyhemetthathewasaprince,forhefeltthataprinceoughttobeabletogetonlikeotherpeople,elsehisrankonlymadeafoolofhim.Hehadreadofprincessettingoutuponadventure;andherehewasoutinsimilarcase,onlywithouthavinghadachoiceinthematter.Hewouldgoon,andseewhatwouldcomeofit.

           Foradayortwohehadbeenwalkingthroughthepalace-wood,andhadhadnexttonothingtoeat,whenhecameuponthestrangestlittlehouse,inhabitedbyaverynice,tidy,motherlyoldwoman.Thiswasoneofthegoodfairies.
