           Everybodyknewtherewereinitseveralfairies,livingwithinafewmilesofthepalace,whoalwayshadhadsomethingtodowitheachnewbabythatcame;forfairieslivesomuchlongerthanwe,thattheycanhavebusinesswithagoodmanygenerationsofhumanmortals.Thecurioushousestheylivedinwerewellknownalso,—one,ahollowoak;another,abirch-tree,thoughnobodycouldeverfindhowthatfairymadeahouseofit;another,ahutofgrowingtreesintertwined,andpatchedupwithturfandmoss.Buttherewasanotherfairywhohadlatelycometotheplace,andnobodyevenknewshewasafairyexcepttheotherfairies.Awickedoldthingshewas,alwaysconcealingherpower,andbeingasdisagreeableasshecould,inordertotemptpeopletogiveheroffence,thatshemighthavethepleasureoftakingvengeanceuponthem.Thepeopleaboutthoughtshewasawitch,andthosewhoknewherbysightwerecarefultoavoidoffendingher.Shelivedinamudhouse,inaswampypartoftheforest.

           Inallhistorywefindthatfairiesgivetheirremarkablegiftstoprinceorprincess,oranychildofsufficientimportanceintheireyes,alwaysatthechristening.Nowthiswecanunderstand,becauseitisanancientcustomamongsthumanbeingsaswell;anditisnothardtoexplainwhywickedfairiesshouldchoosethesametimetodounkindthings;butitisdifficulttounderstandhowtheyshouldbeabletodothem,foryouwouldfancyallwickedcreatureswouldbepowerlessonsuchanoccasion.ButIneverknewofanyinterferenceonthepartofthewickedfairythatdidnotturnoutagoodthingintheend.
