           Inothersthereweremoreofthesignsofwinterleft.Theirfacesremindedyouofsnowandkeencuttingwinds,morethanofsunshineandsoftbreezesandbutterflies;buteveninthemthesignsofsufferingtoldthatthesufferingwasless,andthatifthespring-timehadbutarrived,ithadyetarrived.

           Diamondlookedallround,butcouldseenoNanny.HeturnedtoMr.Raymondwithaquestioninhiseyes.

           “Well?”saidMr.Raymond.

           “Nanny’snothere,”saidDiamond.

           “Oh,yes,sheis.”

           “Idon’tseeher.”

           “Ido,though.Theresheis.”

           HepointedtoabedrightinfrontofwhereDiamondwasstanding.

           “That’snotNanny,”hesaid.

           “ItisNanny.Ihaveseenhermanytimessinceyouhave.Illnessmakesagreatdifference.”

           “Why,thatgirlmusthavebeentothebackofthenorthwind!”thoughtDiamond,buthesaidnothing,onlystared;andashestared,somethingoftheoldNannybegantodawnthroughthefaceofthenewNanny.TheoldNanny,thoughagoodgirl,andafriendlygirl,hadbeenrough,bluntinherspeech,anddirtyinherperson.Herfacewouldalwayshaveremindedonewhohadalreadybeentothebackofthenorthwindofsomethinghehadseeninthebestofcompany,butithadbeencoarsenotwithstanding,partlyfromtheweather,partlyfromherlivingamongstlowpeople,andpartlyfromhavingtodefendherself:nowitwassosweet,andgentle,andrefined,thatshemighthavehadaladyandgentlemanforafatherandmother.
