           “What’suphere?”heasked,andDiamondknewthevoice.Itwasthatofthedrunkencabman.

           “Doyouseethisyoungoyster?Hepretendstodriveacab,”saidhisenemy.

           “Yes,Idoseehim.AndIseesyoutoo.You’dbetterleavehimalone.Heain’tnooyster.He’saangelcomedownonhisownbusiness.Youbeoff,orI’llbeneareryouthanquiteagreeable.”

           Thedrunkencabmanwasatall,stoutman,whodidnotlookonetotakelibertieswith.

           “Oh!ifhe’safriendofyours,”saidtheother,drawingback.

           Diamondgotoutthenose-bagagain.OldDiamondshouldhavehisfeedoutnow.

           “Yes,heisafriendo’mine.Oneo’thebestIeverhad.It’sapityheain’tafriendo’yourn.You’dbethebetterforit,butitain’tnofaultofhisn.”
