           “Doyoulikeriddles?”askedMr.Raymond,turningovertheleavesofhisownbook.

           “It’ssomethingthatmeanssomethingelse,andyou’vegottofindoutwhatthesomethingelseis.”

           Mr.Raymondlikedtheold-fashionedriddlebest,andhadwrittenafew—oneofwhichhenowread.

           Ihaveonlyonefoot,butthousandsoftoes;

           Myonefootstands,butnevergoes.

           Ihavemanyarms,andthey’remightyall;

           Andhundredsoffingers,largeandsmall.

           Fromtheendsofmyfingersmybeautygrows.

           Ibreathewithmyhair,andIdrinkwithmytoes.

           Igrowbiggerandbiggeraboutthewaist,

           AndyetIamalwaysverytightlaced.

           Nonee’ersawmeeat—I’venomouthtobite;

           YetIeatalldayinthefullsunlight.

           InthesummerwithsongIshaveandquiver,

           ButinwinterIfastandgroanandshiver.

           “Doyouknowwhatthatmeans,Diamond?”heasked,whenhehadfinished.

           “No,indeed,Idon’t,”answeredDiamond.

           “Thenyoucanreaditforyourself,andthinkoverit,andseeifyoucanfindout,”saidMr.Raymond,givinghimthebook.“Andnowyouhadbettergohometoyourmother.Whenyou’vefoundtheriddle,youcancomeagain.”

           IfDiamondhadhadtofindouttheriddleinordertoseeMr.Raymondagain,Idoubtifhewouldeverhaveseenhim.

           “Ohthen,”IthinkIhearsomelittlereadersay,“hecouldnothavebeenagenius,forageniusfindsoutthingswithoutbeingtold.”
