           “He’sasharplittlekid,anyhow,forassimpleashelooks,”saidthemantohimself.“Notawrongturndoeshetake!ButoldSal’sarumunforsuchachildtopayamorningvisitto.She’sworsewhenshe’ssoberthanwhenshe’shalfdrunk.I’veseenherwhenshe’dhavetornhiminpieces.”

           HappilythenforDiamond,oldSalhadgoneouttogetsomegin.Whenhecametoherdooratthebottomofthearea-stairandknocked,hereceivednoanswer.Helaidhiseartothedoor,andthoughtheheardamoaningwithin.Sohetriedthedoor,andfounditwasnotlocked!Itwasadrearyplaceindeed,—andverydark,forthewindowwasbelowthelevelofthestreet,andcoveredwithmud,whileoverthegratingwhichkeptpeoplefromfallingintothearea,stoodachestofdrawers,placedtherebyadealerinsecond-handfurniture,whichshutoutalmostallthelight.Andthesmellintheplacewasdreadful.
