           Hehadtolooktwice,however,beforehecouldbesurethatthatwashisboyinthemiddleofthetumult.Herushedin,andsenttheassailantsflyinginalldirections.ThegirlthankedDiamond,andbegansweepingasifnothinghadhappened,whilehisfatherledhimaway.WiththehelpofoldTom,thewaterman,hewassoonwashedintodecency,andhisfathersethimontheboxagain,perfectlysatisfiedwiththeaccounthegaveofthecauseofhisbeinginafray.

           “Icouldn’tletthembehavesotoapoorgirl—couldI,father?”hesaid.

           “Certainlynot,Diamond,”saidhisfather,quitepleased,forDiamond’sfatherwasagentleman.

           Amomentafter,upcamethegirl,running,withherbroomoverhershoulder,andcalling,“Cab,there!cab!”

           Diamond’sfatherturnedinstantly,forhewastheforemostintherank,andfollowedthegirl.Oneortwootherpassingcabsheardthecry,andmadefortheplace,butthegirlhadtakencarenottocalltillshewasnearenoughtogiveherfriendsthefirstchance.Whentheyreachedthecurbstone—whoshoulditbewaitingforthecabbutMrs.andMissColeman!Theydidnotlookatthecabman,however.Thegirlopenedthedoorforthem;theygavehertheaddress,andapenny;shetoldthecabman,andawaytheydrove.

           Whentheyreachedthehouse,Diamond’sfathergotdownandrangthebell.Asheopenedthedoorofthecab,hetouchedhishatashehadbeenwonttodo.
