           Hislittleheartwassofullofmerrimentthatitcouldnotholditall,anditranoverintotheirs.Fatherandmotherbegantolaughtoo,andDiamondlaughedtillhehadafitofcoughingwhichfrightenedhismother,andmadethemallstop.Hisfathertookthebaby,andhismotherputhimtobed.

           Butitwasindeedachangetothemall,notonlyfromSandwich,butfromtheiroldplace,insteadofthegreatriverwherethehugebargeswiththeirmightybrownandyellowsailswenttackingfromsidetosidelikelittlepleasure-skiffs,andwherethelongthinboatsshotpastwitheightandsometimestwelverowers,theirwindowsnowlookedoutuponadirtypavedyard.AndtherewasnogardenmoreforDiamondtorunintowhenhepleased,withgayflowersabouthisfeet,andsolemnsun-filledtreesoverhishead.NeitherwasthereawoodenwallatthebackofhisbedwithaholeinitforNorthWindtocomeinatwhensheliked.Indeed,therewassuchahighwall,andthereweresomanyhousesaboutthemews,thatNorthWindseldomgotintotheplaceatall,exceptwhensomethingmustbedone,andshehadagrandcleaningoutlikeotherhousewives;whilethepartitionattheheadofDiamond’snewbedonlydivideditfromtheroomoccupiedbyacabmanwhodranktoomuchbeer,andcamehomechieflytoquarrelwithhiswifeandpinchhischildren.ItwasdreadfultoDiamondtohearthescoldingandthecrying.Butitcouldnotmakehimmiserable,becausehehadbeenatthebackofthenorthwind.

           IfmyreaderfindithardtobelievethatDiamondshouldbesogood,hemustrememberthathehadbeentothebackofthenorthwind
