Ihopethegentlereaderwillexcusemefordwellingontheseandthelikeparticulars,which,howeverinsignificanttheymayappeartogrovelingvulgarminds,yetwillcertainlyhelpaphilosophertoenlargehisthoughtsandimagination,andapplythemtothebenefitofpublicaswellasprivatelife,whichwasmysoledesigninpresentingthisandotheraccountsofmytravelstotheworld;whereinIhavebeenchieflystudiousoftruth,withoutaffectinganyornamentsoflearningorofstyle.Butthewholesceneofthisvoyagemadesostronganimpressiononmymind,andissodeeplyfixedinmymemory,that,incommittingittopaperIdidnotomitonematerialcircumstance:however,uponastrictreview,Iblottedoutseveralpassages.
