ThismademereflectuponthefairskinsofourEnglishladies,whoappearsobeautifultous,onlybecausetheyareofourownsize,andtheirdefectsnottobeseenbutthroughamagnifyingglass;wherewefindbyexperimentthatthesmoothestandwhitestskinslookrough,andcoarse,andill-coloured.
IrememberwhenIwasatLilliput,thecomplexionofthosediminutivepeopleappearedtomethefairestintheworld;andtalkinguponthissubjectwithapersonoflearningthere,whowasanintimatefriendofmine,hesaidthatmyfaceappearedmuchfairerandsmootherwhenhelookedonmefromtheground,thanitdiduponanearerview,whenItookhimupinmyhand,andbroughthimclose,whichheconfessedwasatfirstaveryshockingsight.Hesaid,"hecoulddiscovergreatholesinmyskin;thatthestumpsofmybeardweretentimesstrongerthanthebristlesofaboar,andmycomplexionmadeupofseveralcoloursaltogetherdisagreeable:"althoughImustbegleavetosayformyself,thatIamasfairasmostofmysexandcountry,andverylittlesunburntbyallmytravels.Ontheotherside,discoursingoftheladiesinthatemperor’scourt,heusedtotellme,"onehadfreckles;anothertoowideamouth;athirdtoolargeanose;"nothingofwhichIwasabletodistinguish.Iconfessthisreflectionwasobviousenough;which,however,Icouldnotforbear,lestthereadermightthinkthosevastcreatureswereactuallydeformed:forImustdothemthejusticetosay,theyareacomelyraceofpeople,andparticularlythefeaturesofmymaster’scountenance,althoughhewasbutafarmer,whenIbeheldhimfromtheheightofsixtyfeet,appearedverywellproportioned.
Whendinnerwasdone,mymasterwentouttohislabourers,and,asIcoulddiscoverbyhisvoiceandgesture,gavehiswifestrictchargetotakecareofme.
